if you would recall, a certain 8km trail run of out/uphill and back/downhill 13 days ago had triggered my recent bout of itb friction on the right knee. although i could pretty much run for a couple of hours before the pain comes on, i thought i had better nab it sooner rather than later.

let’s hope catching it early would release me from this demon early.

perhaps it was delusion in action but the initial deep tissue work seriously felt more bearable than last year’s until… ouch! she decided to bring on the real stuff. lying like a piece of mangled steak on the physio’s table earlier this evening, the excruciating pain could most certainly bring the cow back to life!

training has revolved around not incurring pain on the knee, which also means the week gone included lots of cross training: 3 sessions of weights (1hr x 3), 2 evenings of xc mtb rides (1.5 + 2hr), a hike with weights (1.5hr), a pain free tempo run (1.5hr), an almost pain free trail run (2+hr) and lots of walking (0.75 + 3hr).

the toughest decision was to make the right choice to give the the 23mile long run a miss on sunday morning. although the knee felt great in the morning, i decided against the trip. i actually felt guilty and coaxed nik into a 3hr hike with me just to walk off the negative emotions. what is wrong with me? the obsessive-compulsive-athlete-syndrome?

let’s hope the band responses to treatment quick enough for me to resume training with a vengence. meanwhile, it is back to more kneading and shorter runs.
